RECENT MEETINGS:
Sept 9: Past District
Governor Ted Valentine (99-00) and Shirley Valentine spoke on their journey to
India on behalf of Rotary.
Travelling at their own expense, they first visited the Alphonus Social and
Agricultural Centre at Kurseong in the Himalayan area. They then went on to a
number of villages to immunize children against polio, as part of the Rotary
International effort. An impressive presentation. A new publication " Under
the Northern Lights" is now available covering Rotary activity in Zone 22
(Canada, Alaska, Eastern Russia and St. Pierre/Miquelon). See Pickles for
more details.
The Great Duck Race went on schedule Sept 11,
with a change in location due to strong winds. Even so, the 3000+ ducks were
reluctant to fight the wind, and required some prodding. The winning duck
adapted by swimming very low in the water, my flock was not so clever.
Sep 16: Our guest speaker was none other
than former High River Rotarian (89-03) and Club President ( 98-99)
Don Petlak. Don spoke to us on the Canadian Curling Association. He is eminently
qualified, having been involved with the Association for 14 years, and President
for 2003 - 2004. Don spoke of the many developments during his involvement.
These included more competitions, wider marketing and a budget growth to $25
million.
Former Mayor Eldon Couey, fellow Rotarian
and Paul Harris Fellow, has received yet another well deserved honour. He has
been appointed Ambassador for the Alberta Centennial next year. Congratulations
Eldon!
A 1 ½ times life size statue of George Lane will be erected in High River to
mark Alberta's centennial. The artist, Rick Roenisch will donate half of the
cost, Alberta Lotteries will cover one quarter and fellow Rotarian Doug
McLaughlin will donate the rest. Great citizenship, Doug.
Irv reported our Interact club is off to a good start this year with 17
students at the first meeting. Rotarian Ken Dudgeon will oversee the Club
this year.
Rotarian Gordon Jones and his lovely wife Linora are "Goin' to beat
60", with their 60th wedding anniversary
approaching October 23rd. Keep this date open.
Sept 23: Past Presidents Ted Dawson (01 - 02) and Peter
McGuigan (02 - 03) presented a condensed history of Rotary, and an
explanation of the present position. Rotary is the oldest service club, about to
celebrate its 100th anniversary. There are 1,222,733 Rotarians in 31,603 clubs
in 166 countries. The group Study Exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary
Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for business
and professional people between the ages of 25 and 40. District 5360 will be
doing an exchange with The Philippines. Openings are available for a Rotarian
leader and non - Rotarian participants. (See www.rotary.org
and search Group Study Exchange)
Sept 30: The fifth Thursday of any month
is "President's Night", with President Doug providing surprise
entertainment. This week we had Lesley Wendt from Amazing Grapes, with Vincor
rep Royal, providing a seminar on making your own wine. The session was
extremely informative, and tasty. We learned that sterilizing is 99.9% of the
issue, and that Ferg has an incredibly well stocked wine cellar which is
the fruit! Of his own labour.
Terry Arnett provided the financial results of The Great Duck Race, after
all expenses, approximately $5400 in our coffers. Terry also advised they have
improvement plans for next year. Kudos to Terry, Judy, Wally G. and all
those who made it happen.
